Even if this were technical feasible (which I believe it might be), I can virtually guarantee you that it will be unsatisfactory at best. The kind of "SCSI connector" that comes on a soundcard is just good enough to service a CD-ROM drive, which tops out at say 450k/sec for a triple-speed drive. Hook up a reasonable (4M/sec? I'm not even sure, but around there) hard drive to it and you'll be seriously bottlenecking it. On the other hand, that daughtercard is still a reasonable option for just hooking up a CD-ROM drive. SCSI CD-ROMs tend to be slightly more expensive, but then again you could conceivably use them elsewhere as well. If you got that card and an external SCSI CD-ROM drive, for instance, you could probably move the same drive between multiple computers and other equipment. Whether this is useful to you or not I cannot say, of course. I know nothing about the daughtercard existences or usefulness (I have a GUS MAX which came with three types of CD-ROM connector, one of which I'm using with a Panasonic drive that was packaged up by Reveal), so I will wish you good luck in your purchases.. Your overwhelming response to LucasArts about putting GUS support in Dark Forces seems to have had a lasting effect on LucasArts, as evidenced by the "form letter" they sent to all who wrote them regarding the GUS. Evidently enough people wrote to make them notice!!! Good job to the many people who wrote and hopefully helped clinch LucasArts' support of the best damn sound card inovation since the original AdLib.... Is it anywhere on the internet, or is it CD-ROM and huge? Anyone out there using Linux Slackware Professional 2.1.1 (Fall 94 release) and the GUS and could give me some help setting it up? Also, anyone know where to get a copy of Win9x beta? I would like to try to test it and get the GUS to work. And lastly, it seems we've gotten LucasArts attention. They are sending "form-email" to everyone, so the mail must have gotten kinda heavy. I had downloaded the DF demo, but was never able to get it to work with the GUS. How did you (whoever managed this feat) do this? Since I found this game unable to work on my system, I deleted it, unfortunately. If anyone can direct me to an FTP site with this game (and with the demo version of Tie Fighter- I saw a floppy disk at a computer store and suspect it must be out there _somewhere_) and instructions on getting it working with the GUS, i'd appreciate it. And my last request is this. I might be able to get a SB-16 card with CD rom package for a very good price. Has anyone used a SB16 and Gus card simultaneously, with CD Rom installed, and run os/2? I ask because I'm curious about how the IRQs should be set, esp in OS/2 so that the printer port (I'm printerless _now_ but I'd rather avoid future troubles) IRQ of 7 isn't used by either card, and that I dont have a problem with the SB or the GUS. Perhaps I should uninstall the GUS driver in OS/2 and use only the soundblaster in os/2? Again, any suggestions or help would be much appreciated. I mean, I'm trying to tinker with the GUS programmically. Because the silly original GUS came loaded with only 256K, I have to cater to the lowest common denominator when writing software -- this cramps my brain.
